The Dept of Biophysics was established way back in 1979 in IGMC Shimla.Biophysics is a subject at the interface of modern biology and medicine. It deals with the development at the molecular level as well as tools required for the understanding of various biological processes resulting in applications for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in medicine.Its main emphasis is on the quantitative analysis of the physical and chemical aspect of functions of biological molecules and organism. The techniques and methodologies that biophysics relies on are closer to physical discipline, but the arena of applications are in life sciences and medical sciences. In view of this it forms an essential component of modern medical education. The broad goal of teaching Biophysics to undergraduate students is that they should understand basic principles involved in the functioning of body organs in normal and diseased conditions.
