INTODUCTION:
The Department of Immunohaematology & Blood Transfusion, IGMC Shimla is a Regional Blood Transfusion Centre as recognized by NACO, New Delhi. This Department was created in the year 2008. The license for processing whole human blood I.P. was granted in the year-1996 and annual collection was around 5000 units with 33% through voluntary collection. With the development of clinical and super specialty departments and to optimize blood utilization a Component Separation Unit was started and NACO granted a BCSU status, in the year 2002. As per National Blood Policy guidelines, the department is promoting voluntary blood donation by spreading messages through posters, awareness camps, poster competitions and felicitating donors on World Blood Donor Day and National Voluntary Blood Donation Day. Voluntary blood donations have steadily increased over the years. The number of Voluntary Blood Donation Camps has also increased over the years to about 80-90 per year. The annual blood collection is around 9500 units with 75% through voluntary donations. The blood units are processed into various blood components such as Packed Red Cells, fresh frozen plasma, platelet concentrate and Cryoprecipitate.

The Department provides round the clock emergency services for the supply of blood and blood components to patients within IGMC and other hospitals. For arranging blood in emergency situations the department has displayed the names, and telephone numbers of various NGOs active in the field of blood donation. The name, address and telephone number of individual donor is also provided to the patients/their attendants by the Department to arrange blood in urgent conditions. The Department provides the facility of blood/blood components to various Thalassemia major and cancer patients without taking replacement donation on regular basis. The department is in growing phase and require more facilities to be added; we hope that with continued efforts and support we would scale now heights in near future.
