INTRODUCTION:

EYE-BANK-

                        Eye-Bank is an institution that provides round the clock public response system over telephone, creates public awareness about eye-donation co-ordinates with donor families and hospitals to motivate eye donation to run Hospital Cornea Retrieval Programme (HRCP), to harvest corneal tissue, to process and to preserve and evaluate the collected tissue.

 

  • Eye bank at IGMC was started on29.08.2010 after inauguration by Honourable Chief Ministers Prem Kumar Dhumal.
  • The necessary infrastructure regarding machinery, equipment and space etc. was created as per the HOTA 1994.
  • The IGMC eye bank achieved the first landmark by performing its first successful corneal transplantation in the state of HP on Jan 8, 2011 and 2nd on January 9, 2011
  • The Eye Bank is providing the facilities for registration of Pledging of eyes; the No. of pledger has increased from 2 to 48 in last 6 months who have pledged their eyes to the IGMC Eye bank and necessary certificate has been issued.
  • Awareness within the IGMC hospital and in public is being created through different media (radio talk, news paper).
  • Eye bank has facilities for removal, collection and processing of the donated eyes for the people who wish to donate their eyes after death. The facilities are available round the clock within the hospital and in approachable areas within two hours of death.
  • The setting up of eye donation centres at all the district hospitals of state and civil hospital has already been proposed. We have already given such proposal to ZH Dharamshala, ZH Solan and in response to the queries from different places
  • There are facilities for corneal transplantation and transportation in case the corneas reach to the Eye Bank.
  • The waiting list of the recipient is ready and is continuously updated in the cornea clinic which is run on every Tuesday at 2 pm in Eye OPD.

 Eyes should be donated within 6-8 hrs of death and takes only 15-20 minutes to remove eye.

 There is no disfigurement of the face of the donor

 

 Eye-Donation

Eye-donation means donating the eyes of a person after death for transplantation with the family consent.

  • Eyes should be removed within 6-8 hours of death.
  • Anyone can be donor, irrespective of age, sex, blood group or religion.
  • Anyone with cataract or spectacles can donate eyes.
  •  Persons suffering from hypertension, diabetes can also donate eyes.

 

 How & When  

  • Total time for removal of eyes takes only 15-20 minutes. There is no disfigurement of the face of the donor.
  • Eyes can be donated even if the deceased had not formally pledged their eyes during their lifetime but the nearest relative consent for donation.
  • Eye Bank team will rush over to the donor’s home or any other place where the body is available after death. This is a free service in public interest within the 25 km of eyebank.
  • After pledging please inform your family about your wish to donate eyes, so that they can fulfil your wish.

 

Instructions
  • For eye donation, please fill the pledge form and send it to any of the nearest eye bank. You will be registered as an Eye donor and will be provided an individual Eye Donor Card.
  • Spread information & awareness about eye donation.
  • Your words add value to the movement of the eye donation.
  • When donating the eyes of the deceased, do remember to: Dial the nearest Eye- Bank IGMC 2883548 immediately.
  • Raise the head of the body with the help of a pillow till eyes are removed.
  • Place wet and cold cotton swab on closed eyes.    
  • Switch off the fans over the body and keep the air- conditioner or cooler on till eyes are removed.
